AMERICAN QUEEN VOYAGES™ RENEWS BUSINESS FOCUS ON CORE RIVER PRODUCTS

Fort Lauderdale, FL – June 20, 2023 – In a strategic decision to refocus its business on its award-winning river cruises, American Queen Voyages® (AQV), part of Hornblower® Group, has announced a series of deployment changes and updates set to commence in early 2024 and extend into 2025. New routes are now open for early bookings with early savings available on key dates.
Our primary commitment is to deliver a best-in-class cruise vacation with a focus on immersive culinary and destination experiences,” said Cindy D’Aoust, president of American Queen Voyages. “Our customers consistently tell us our U.S. River itineraries are exceptional and demonstrate this by returning again and again.” A fact recently supported through a McKinsey market survey where participants noted American Queen Voyages enjoys the highest brand affinity amongst U.S. river operators. “All of our focus is being put into updating and enhancing our popular river product with strategic partnerships and an elevated culinary program, which we know have been very well received,” added D’Aoust.
Revised 2024 Itineraries Include:
- Lower Mississippi: AQV will begin the season with its popular Lower Mississippi voyages through the cities and historic port towns of the South on the 417-guest American Queen, the largest steamboat ever built. Based on guest requests, we will offer new three- and four-day cruises for time-pressed travelers.
- Upper Mississippi: Back by popular demand, we will be traversing the mighty Mississippi from its headwaters in Minnesota all the way to the Gulf of Mexico. This epic, 16-day journey combines wildlife and intricate locks and dams, with Southern charms and the birthplaces of jazz and country music.
- America’s Heartland: The 245-guest, paddle wheeler American Countess cruises the Ohio, Tennessee, and Cumberland rivers. New Experiential Voyages include a bourbon-themed voyage with noted food and spirits experts, including Dickie Brennan, chef-owner of the legendary Bourbon House in New Orleans.
- Snake & Columbia Rivers: Travelers can discover the unspoiled treasures of the Pacific Northwest aboard the 221-guest American Empress, including new wine-themed cruises. Depending on the voyage, guests can join a salmon excursion and bring their freshly caught and cleaned catch back to enjoy on the boat.
- Alaska & British Columbia: AQV will return to Alaska for its third season. Aboard the environmentally friendly, 186-guest Ocean Victory, guests enjoy expeditions via Zodiac exploration boats and kayak excursions led by a team of naturalists and field guides in cooperation with California Polytechnic State University.
As part of its new focus, AQV will not return to the Great Lakes next season and as a result has announced its intent to sell its Ocean Navigator and Ocean Voyager vessels. All current published voyages will continue to operate as planned through November 2023.

AMERICAN QUEEN VOYAGES™ EMBARKS ON A JOURNEY OF FLAVOR WITH NEWLY ENHANCED CULINARY PROGRAM

(Image: Savor world-class cuisine such as cod with andouille in saffron broth aboard American Queen Voyages)
Fort Lauderdale, FL – March 9, 2023 – American Queen Voyages™, part of Hornblower® Group, is kicking off 2023 by reinvigorating its culinary experience across its fleet of Rivers, Lakes & Oceans, and Expedition vessels. Guests voyaging through North America will be taken on a tasteful journey of gastronomic excellence as they not only explore each port’s sites, but also its unique flavors. Culinary Ambassador Regina Charboneau is heading up the new culinary programming, bringing elevated menus of regionally inspired cuisine to the dinner table.
“Exploring the tastes and flavors of a region is in the DNA of any travel experience, and by elevating our culinary program will enhance the guest experience, allowing travelers to truly immerse themselves in the region they are visiting,” says Cindy D’Aoust, president, American Queen Voyages. “We are incredibly excited for our guests to embark on this new culinary adventure with us across all of our itineraries.”
With Regina Charboneau’s expertise, American Queen Voyages has refined its menus to feature dishes prepared with locally sourced ingredients. Each menu will be tailored to their itinerary, showcasing the region guests are sailing through while telling a story about each port’s unique culture and history. Menus on the Lower Mississippi River are inspired by New Orleans culture and the Sicilian and German influence in the region. Some of the menu items include delicious dishes, such as seafood gumbo, chicken pontalba, and lobster rockefeller.
“Guests are in for a treat with our new menus,” says Regina Charboneau, culinary ambassador, American Queen Voyages. “The revitalized culinary program brings the culture of each region to life. In the Pacific Northwest, guests can expect Chinese and Native American influences. While on the Lower Mississippi River, guests can enjoy Cajun and Creole flavors.”
For an even more immersive culinary experience, guests can embark on a brand new ‘Culinary & Cocktails’ themed cruise, in addition to the already popular Wine Cruises and Bourbon Cruises. These sailings will take all the elements of the elevated culinary experience and add in some surprises, such as special guests, cooking demos, cocktail tastings, viticulture seminars, culinary competitions, unique land excursions and more.
Additionally, American Queen Voyages recently partnered with PBS’s hit show, America’s Test Kitchen, signing on as a sponsor for the 23rd Season. America’s Test Kitchen is the longest-running cooking show in the U.S. on public television since 2001. Both brands are committed to culinary excellence and have partnered to bring travelers and viewers a one-of-a-kind culinary experience in 2023 and beyond.

(Image: SpacEx’s Starlink Maritime Antenna at sea.)
Fort Lauderdale, FL – February 9, 2023 – American Queen Voyages™, part of Hornblower® Group, has announced SpaceX Starlink upgrades to the entire fleet of seven, including the award-winning cruise lines Rivers, Lakes & Oceans, and Expedition vessels. American Queen Voyages is the first cruise line with an entire fleet to be fully upgraded with the fastest internet, including Starlink antennas and 5G cellular back-up.
“Upgrading our included Wi-Fi to Space X’s Starlink will enhance the guest and crew experience on all of our vessels,” says Cindy D’Aoust, president, American Queen Voyages. “This new internet service will now allow guests to stay connected while deeply discovering North America, enjoying the comforts of at-home Wi-Fi at sea.”
Starlink will be installed, tested, and ready to use on all vessels before they sail in 2023. American Queen®, American Countess®, and Ocean Navigator™ have already undergone Starlink installation, and the technology is ready for guests and crew to enjoy. Each vessel will have multiple maritime Starlink grade kits, providing significant bandwidth in partnership with the FMC Global Sat 5G solution, which will be an included amenity in American Queen Voyages’ luxurious all-inclusive offerings.
Emmanuel Cotrel, Chief Executive Officer of FMC, commented: “FMC’s innovative solutions integrated with Starlink’s connectivity enables applications and services that require low latency and significant Mbps of bandwidth, that were, until now, considered unrealistic or cost prohibitive. We are pleased to help provide American Queen Voyage passengers and crew with best-in-class internet connectivity wherever they travel.”
SpaceX’s Starlink is a satellite internet constellation that provides internet access and coverage on a global scale. Starlink is the fastest and most powerful internet service and allows American Queen Voyages and their guests to enjoy reliable Wi-Fi no matter where they sail. AMERICAN QUEEN VOYAGES™ ANNOUNCES ALL-INCLUSIVE FARE UPDATES FOR 2023

(Image: Iconic red paddlewheel American Queen Voyages river boats)
Fort Lauderdale, FL – December 1, 2022 – American Queen Voyages (AQV), a cruise industry leader known as the “Best River Cruise Line in the United States” and part of the Hornblower® Group, announced updates to the all-inclusive fare offerings. The new convenient pricing structure will feature inclusion of port charges, taxes, services fees and onboard crew gratuities as part of the American Queen Voyages all-inclusive fares beginning Jan. 2, 2023. Travel agents will also earn commission on previously non-commissionable fees (NCFs) as an opportunity to increase earnings.
“At American Queen Voyages, our ultimate goal is to deliver a cut-above experience for our guests before they even step foot aboard our vessels,” said Cindy D’Aoust, President of American Queen Voyages. “To do this, we are rolling out extra inclusions at one bundled price to create the overall best cost point and financial transparency for our highly-valued guests. After listening to feedback from our travel partners, we knew this new pricing structure was the best way to bundle port charges, taxes, service fees and gratuities into one advertised fare, while offering an increased commission opportunity to our valued cruise travel agents.”
New All-Inclusive Fares Best for Guests
The new all-inclusive fares are structured to offer guests an added convenience of bundling incremental travel costs, offering a complete view of the total cruise package price without hidden fare surprises. With nearly everything included in one bundled price, the only additional expenses for AQV guests, while on board, will be optional premium shore excursions, top-shelf alcoholic beverages, spa treatments, and boutique purchases.
The line has additional plans to continue to elevate services to deliver deeper discoveries and experiences for travelers including enhancements to AQV’s signature American Duchess vessel planned for next year.
New All-Inclusive Fares Enhanced for Travel Agents
With the ultimate goal to deliver a cut-above experience for each guest before they set sail, the American Queen Voyages team created the bundled pricing structure after learning from travel partners that customers want a convenient all-in-one price package for their trip. As many of the fees now offered in bundled pricing often fall into the category of NCFs for travel agents, the revised fare structure will allow for enhanced commissions and earning potential.

NEW AMERICAN QUEEN VOYAGES™ PRESIDENT SAILS INTO Q4 WITH A STRATEGIC VISION

(Vessel: American Queen)
Fort Lauderdale, FL – November 10, 2022 – Cindy D’Aoust, the newly-appointed President of American Queen Voyages (AQV), part of the Hornblower® Group, is leaning into four decades of travel industry experience as she begins her tenure at the helm of the beloved U.S.-based cruise line. With a holistic leadership style, D’Aoust’s immediate priorities are to build upon the strong foundation of AQV with a focus on people, prestige and ports.
“American Queen Voyages is an established, storied cruise line and brand known for exemplary service and experiences,” said Cindy D’Aoust, President of American Queen Voyages. “The opportunity moving forward is to further strengthen the reputation and relationships to continue on a growth trajectory. Working with the talented teams at AQV and Hornblower Group, I am confident in the leadership strategy that will help to make American Queen Voyages the top American-based cruise line of choice.”
People: Focusing on Relationships
Building meaningful relationships with travel agents, guests and employees has always been a priority for D’Aoust. She attributes her past success to learning and listening to these key audiences.
“One thing I have learned during my time in travel is the importance of the travel advisor,” said D’Aoust. “Travel professionals are the essential resource for our guests to discover the perfect itinerary and vessel, and at American Queen Voyages it will always be my priority to listen to our travel agent network and build strong, lasting relationships with our cruise travel partners.”
With a passion for delivering an exceptional guest experience, D’Aoust is also placing a greater emphasis on guest feedback in order to create an unmatched adventure on the water. In the immediate future, the company plans to work with travel partners to take a deeper dive into guest preferences and strategically plan accordingly for future sailings.
American Queen Voyages would not be the cruise line of choice for travel agents and guests if it weren’t for the extraordinary work of the crew and staff. “The hospitable culture at American Queen Voyages is already exceptional and I plan to be a resource for our crew and staff to ensure their suggestions are heard so we can continue to offer elevated service aboard our vessels,” said D’Aoust.
Prestige: Elevating the Brand Reputation
Working in the cruise industry, D’Aoust learned first-hand about the immense value of a strong, positive image and reputation. Her goal at American Queen Voyages includes elevating the company’s image through a series of luxury-level upgrades to service, product enhancements and exclusive itinerary offerings.
Today, D’Aoust announced upgrade enhancements planned for AQV’s American Duchess vessel. A purposely-built boutique paddlewheeler holding only 166 guests debuting in 2017, American Duchess will become a symbol of prestige on America’s rivers. The upgrades will honor the American Duchess’ history, incorporating elevated onboard services and a dedicated shore enrichment program specific to the vessel, along with re-imagined itineraries. Built from an existing hull of a retired casino boat, the American Duchess has deep ties to the Mighty Mississippi and will be ready to set sail for the 2024 season with additional enhancements and updates announced over the coming months.
With a nod to the priority on increased communication, the American Queen Voyages leadership team is assembling an American Duchess-specific advising task force of travel partners, agents, and hospitality industry experts to prioritize feedback in order to deliver an immersive, dynamic experience for every guest.
These upgrades are part of a larger strategy to further enhance the American Queen Voyages travel experiences. The American Duchess will sail the first half of 2023 before her extended layup begins in June 2023.
Ports: Economic Impact of America’s Ports
The economic impact for each port visited by American Queen Voyages sailings is an average of $135 per person, per day. Guests and crew disembark at destinations and spend money in local stores, pharmacies, restaurants, bars and more.
American Queen Voyages brings this economic influx to a variety of less-traveled destinations along America’s waterways. D’Aoust plans to identify new and exciting additions and extensions to AQV’s cruise itineraries which will bring additional revenue to new port locations while also offering guests new, unique experiences.
“One of the amazing opportunities we have at AQV is to help our guests discover the beauty, history and people of America – both in major cities and smaller towns,” said D’Aoust. “Our strategy will incorporate thoughtful and deliberate ways to bring a positive economic impact to the American ports American Queen Voyages serves.”
Prior to becoming American Queen Voyages President, D’Aoust served as President of Hospitality for Cape Resorts Management Company and Global President & CEO of Cruise Lines International Association (CLIA). AMERICAN QUEEN VOYAGES™ PARTNERS WITH THE NATIONAL MUSEUM OF THE GREAT LAKES TO INTRODUCE LAKELORIAN FOR THE 2023 SEASON

(Kate Fineske, senior director of institutional advancement, National Museum of the Great Lakes)
Fort Lauderdale, FL – Sept. 22, 2022 – American Queen Voyages™, part of the Hornblower® Group, is partnering with the National Museum of the Great Lakes to create a new Lakelorian program for the Lakes & Oceans fleet. Kicking off the 2023 Great Lakes season in Toronto in May, Ocean Voyager™ and Ocean Navigator™ will each include a permanent lecturer on each sailing, holding the title of Lakelorian, similar to the Riverlorian onboard each American Queen Voyages paddlewheeler. The Lakelorian will lead lectures, host discussions and answer questions throughout the journey across these mighty bodies of freshwater. With equal parts knowledge and passion for the Great Lakes, Lakelorians will be selected and provide exclusive programming in collaboration with the renowned National Museum of the Great Lakes in Toledo, OH.
“Our partnership with American Queen Voyages began taking shape in 2020 with their extraordinary support of Great Lakes history through an 11-day Great Lakes cruise donation which we used as the grand prize for our Luck of the Lakes Raffle,” shares Kate Fineske, senior director of institutional advancement, National Museum of the Great Lakes. “Since then, we have come to recognize American Queen Voyages Lakes & Oceans ships as floating ambassadors of the Great Lakes, bringing thousands of visitors from around the world to deeply discover our region’s rich history. We look forward to Ocean Voyager and Ocean Navigator becoming an extension of the National Museum of the Great Lakes through this innovative Lakelorian program, and welcoming guests to discover our museum and all we have to offer.”
Just as the rivers of America are a great source of history and culture, the Great Lakes hold a treasure trove of information worthy of a dedicated lecturer. The Lakelorian will share and enlighten guests on the uniqueness of each port in the Great Lakes and be a welcomed storyteller of the region, versed in its history and the support of The National Museum of the Great Lakes for expertise. The Lakelorian will hold daily Lake Chats in the Tavern or Compass Lounge to provide information about the town or city in which American Queen Voyages is visiting for the day. In addition to the daily lectures, each sailing will feature an exclusive lecture highlighting a current exhibit at The National Museum of the Great Lakes.
“The 2022 Lakes & Oceans season has been an incredible success showcasing what makes exploring the Great Lakes onboard Ocean Voyager and Ocean Navigator such an extraordinary experience ,” said Bill Annand, vice president of Vessel Operations Lakes & Oceans for American Queen Voyages and a proud lifelong Michigander himself. “From exclusively docking in downtown Chicago at Navy Pier to maiden arrivals in smaller ports like Green Bay and Sturgeon Bay, guests aboard these vessels witness what makes the Great Lakes so special. The National Museum of the Great Lakes has been an invaluable resource. We are excited to support the museum in Toledo on Sept. 24 at their H2Oh! Gala providing this year’s winner of another Great Lakes Cruise and to continue to grow our partnership through our Lakelorian program. The National Museum of the Great Lakes reveals the varied and fascinating history of our treasured Great Lakes, which make up 84% of all of the freshwater in North America. Guests can join these sailings to explore the history of the world’s greatest natural resource—from canoes and schooners to early steamers and freighters—some of which ply the mighty Maumee River right next to the Museum.”
Ocean Voyager and Ocean Navigator hold only 202 guests, delivering immersive Lakes & Oceans experiences in North America sailing the Great Lakes, Canada and New England. American Queen Voyages Great Lakes voyages of 11- to 16-days call on North America’s historic five Great Lakes and the storied St. Lawrence River. Port highlights include exploring the Victorian-era charm of Mackinac Island, historic Soo Locks, breathtaking Manitoulin Island, the largest freshwater island in the world, the world-famous Horseshoe Falls of Niagara Falls, the Henry Ford Museum in Detroit and the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland. All cruises include a pre-cruise hotel night and in Chicago offer an optional of the iconic architecture tour from the water. In addition, guests sailing on the fall Great Lakes itineraries will enjoy overnight excursions in several city ports for the first-time including Toronto, Quebec City and Mackinac Island on American Queen Voyages.
Individuals can still purchase Luck of the Lakes Raffle tickets for a chance to win an 11-day American Queen Voyages cruise and to support the National Museum of the Great Lakes. For more information on the raffle and to purchase a ticket visit NMGL.org.

Fort Lauderdale, FL – August 25, 2022 – American Queen Voyages™, part of Hornblower® Group, announced details for their 2023 Kentucky Derby Cruise, a highlight of the Ohio River season. Aboard the newest paddlewheeler in the riverboat fleet, American Countess, the nine-day voyage will begin with a pre-cruise hotel at Louisville’s fabled Brown Hotel on Monday, May 1. Itinerary highlights include competing in the annual Great American Steamboat Race while onboard, lectures by horse racing historians and a new celebration of Kentucky cuisine with Culinary Ambassador Regina Charboneau. A limited number of escorted VIP 2023 Kentucky Derby ticket packages are available for additional purchase.
“The Kentucky Derby Cruise is one of my favorite sailings as it captures the magical energy of Louisville during race week,” explains John Waggoner, founder and chairman of American Queen Voyages. “Last year’s special cruise conflicted with my obligations at the launch of our new Alaska expedition ship Ocean Victory but I look forward for 2023, cheering on the American Countess in the Great American Steamboat Race and celebrating all the festivities.”
American Queen Voyages’ newest paddlewheeler, the 245-guest American Countess, will sail the Ohio River from Louisville to Cincinnati with stops in Madison, Brandenburg, and Augusta. The first shipboard highlight of the itinerary will be the Great American Steamboat Race in downtown Louisville as the American Countess joins the Belle of Louisville and Belle of Cincinnati on Wednesday, May 3. Guests sailing during the Derby Cruise can sip Kentucky bourbon from the ship’s decks as thousands of people line the riverbanks to watch the race that starts and ends at the Clark Memorial Bridge in Louisville. The Great Steamboat Race is just one of the events in the Kentucky Derby Festival with other events including firework displays, parades, running races, a hot air balloon event, fashion shows, bed races and concerts.
Often called “the most exciting two minutes in sports,” the Kentucky Derby race itself, held annually on the first Saturday of May since 1875, will be on May 6, 2023,. The Derby is the longest continually held sporting event in America and is one of the most prestigious horse races in the world. Guests on the American Queen Voyages cruise will be able to purchase an escorted VIP race package that includes deluxe transfers, fast pass access to the Churchill Downs racecourse, premium seating, plus lounge, food and open bar. At the races, guests will witness the sights, sounds, colors and tradition of the Derby while trying a mint julep, the quintessential bourbon-based cocktail of the annual race.
New for the 2023 Kentucky Derby Cruise, Culinary Ambassador Regina Charboneau will join onboard to take part in a culinary celebration of the Ohio River as she conducts cooking demonstrations of regional culinary favorites along the Ohio River. Guests can look forward to enjoying the Louisville Hot Brown, Cincinnati Skyline Chili and Pittsburgh pierogies. Food pairings with Kentucky bourbon and a special dinner featuring Chef Regina’s favorite dishes will be a highlight.
“Much of my travels in 2022 have focused on the Ohio River region and the 2023 Kentucky Derby Cruise is the pinnacle of voyages to showcase and share all I have discovered about the region,” shares Culinary Ambassador Regina Charboneau. “This sailing promises to feature bountiful cuisine, plenty of storytelling and refreshing mint juleps along the way.”
Per guest fares for the Kentucky Derby Cruise sailing from $2,999 and escorted VIP Kentucky Derby Ticket Packages are $1,999. For more information, visit aqvoyages.com.

AMERICAN QUEEN® ARRIVES IN PITTSBURGH; ANNOUNCES EXTENDED JOURNEYS 23-DAY GRAND OHIO & UPPER MISSISSIPPI RIVERS SAILING

Pittsburgh, PA – Aug. 8, 2022 – American Queen Voyages™, part of the Hornblower® Group, announced a new itinerary for 2023, which is the most comprehensive in the company’s ten year history. On July 24, 2023, the American Countess® Grand Ohio & Upper Mississippi Rivers sailing will embark on a 23-day journey for Pittsburgh from Minneapolis (Red Wing), allowing guests to explore the 1772-mile route of the Mississippi and Ohio rivers together like never before. This sailing will be available in reverse embarking from Pittsburgh on Aug. 14, 2023. The 2023 Grand Ohio & Upper Mississippi Rivers sailing will cover more miles, call on more port cities and offer the most unlimited guided tours of any itineraries in American Queen Voyages 10-year history.
To celebrate this historic sailing announcement and today’s arrival of flagship American Queen in downtown Pittsburgh, the cruise line partnered with local student-athletes, including Men’s Basketball Guard William Jeffress, to welcome the boat and raise awareness about jobs on the world’s largest paddlewheeler.
“Guests have made the 16-day Mighty Mississippi voyage between Minneapolis (Red Wing) and New Orleans one of our most popular itineraries, and we are pleased to reveal an even more immersive itinerary sailing to Pittsburgh that now incorporates the Mississippi and Ohio rivers,” said Isis Ruiz, chief commercial officer of American Queen Voyages. “Pittsburgh has such a rich riverboat and sports history, so announcing the Grand Ohio & Upper Mississippi Rivers with the city’s talented student-athletes and American Queen in the shadow of Acrisure Stadium (formerly Heinz Field) was a perfect fit.”
Basketball Guard William Jeffress and Others Visit American Queen® in Pittsburgh
While docked at Pittsburgh’s North Shore Riverfront Park, Football Offensive Lineman Carter Warren and Defensive Lineman Deslin Alexandre, Men’s Basketball Guard William Jeffress, Women’s Basketball Guard Lauren Wasylson, and Women’s Tennis Player Alexandra Jaksec headlined an NIL (Name, Image, Likeness) campaign raising awareness of American Queen Voyages’ Pittsburgh sailings along with hospitality and marine operations jobs on the river. The student-athletes created content and met with many of the crew to learn about onboard occupations including captain, housekeeper, deckhand, entertainer and purser. Available shoreside and shipboard positions are listed at www.aqvoyages.com/careers/.
“This has been a memorable day for the American Queen crew, who shared their contributions to the U.S. river cruising industry, and we wish to thank all the student-athletes who attended our event for spending time onboard,” said Christina Hobbs, vice president, human resources of American Queen Voyages. “Utilizing this NIL partnership has been a unique way to recruit ourselves, while also showcasing our incredible onboard team. I know these talented student-athletes gained some new fans for the upcoming season.”
The 417-guest American Queen is currently sailing nine-day Ohio River voyages between Louisville and Pittsburgh with ports of call including Madison, Cincinnati, Maysville, Point Pleasant and Marietta. Guests embarking in Pittsburgh today enjoyed a pre-cruise hotel night downtown and explored the city. American Queen Voyages newest riverboat, the 245-guest American Countess, visited Pittsburgh earlier this year and will return September 6, 2022.
“It’s great to have American Queen Voyages not only come to the city of Pittsburgh, but to also team with local student-athletes in a very unique NIL partnership,” says Sammy Spina, VMG Sports Representation. “NIL has been a great tool for many student-athletes across the country. This is another creative way to make an impact utilizing Name, Image, and Likeness to educate others about employment opportunities.”
The Minneapolis (Red Wing) to Pittsburgh voyage takes guests through the most scenic spots on the Mississippi and Ohio rivers. Passing through 10 states and 1772 miles, this sailing on American Countess offers a one-of-a-kind exploration of North America. AMERICAN QUEEN VOYAGES™ CELEBRATES INAUGURAL EXPEDITION SEASON WITH OCEAN VICTORY™
“Alaska is a unique destination that to even begin to understand its vastness demands immersion with an expedition experience,” said Shawn Bierdz, chief operating officer, American Queen Voyages. “Ocean Victory will deliver guests an intimate sailing experience that really allows them to become captivated by the destination’s many natural wonders. We’re thrilled to have welcomed our first guests onboard as we embark on our journey to Alaska’s Inside Passage.”
Created for intimate access with an innovative X-Bow design, the vessel sails the less-traveled regions of Alaska’s Inside Passage where like-minded explorers will deploy kayaks and Zodiacs with expedition leaders, view wildlife from sliding observation platforms, witness marine research by California Polytechnic State University students in real-time and have engaging discussions with native Alaska leaders.
“As we celebrate the debut of Ocean Victory, I am inspired by our growth from a one paddlewheel cruise line, the American Queen, to a fleet of vessels this very day sailing Mississippi, Kentucky, Washington, Prince Edward Island and Quebec,” shared John Waggoner, founder and chairman of American Queen Voyages. “Today we call on over 125 ports with seven vessels, employing over 670 teammates – far exceeding even the dreams of this boy of just one boat.”
As part of the American Queen Voyages expedition experience, the line has partnered with Dr. Michelle Fournet, director of the Sound Science Research Collective, for the inaugural Alaska expedition season of Ocean Victory. The acclaimed acoustic ecologist is a leading expert in the communication of North Pacific humpback whales, and was profiled along with her Sound Science Research Collective team in the acclaimed documentary “Fathom.”
Fournet and the Sound Science Research Collective will collaborate with the American Queen Voyages expedition team as the ship becomes an extension of their research lab. Hydrophones will be used onboard Zodiacs to listen to the voices of Alaska’s whales in real-time. Guests will also learn about and participate in whale tracking through fluke identification by uploading their own photos from the vessel to a scientific database following their seasonal movements.
In port, inclusive shore excursions with knowledgeable experts and expedition guides provide meaningful opportunities to uncover the rich history, unique wildlife and fascinating cultures of each destination. Equipped with a fleet of Zodiacs and kayaks, the itineraries will provide guests with in-depth explorations of Alaska’s natural, historic and cultural treasures.
The Ocean Victory inaugural Alaska season program highlights include:
Anan Creek Bear and Wildlife Observatory: Guests venture into the Alaskan wilderness for a once-in-a-lifetime look at the forest’s wildlife in their natural habitat. They will travel by jet boat from Wrangell through the Eastern Passage to the Anan trailhead. Here, Anan Creek provides the perfect landscape for an observatory, as it is one of the largest salmon runs in Southeast Alaska. This makes it a prime location for the local bear population to feed, as well as bald eagles and harbor seals. At the Anan Bear and Wildlife Observatory, guests will experience up-close views of these majestic creatures.
Five Finger Lighthouse: The historic Five Finger Lighthouse is located at the confluence of Stephen’s Passage and Frederick Sound in Southeast Alaska. The island on which it sits and the surrounding waters are a home to nesting seabirds, foraging songbirds, bald eagles, Steller sea lions, harbor seals, sea otters, harbor porpoise, transient killer whales and large numbers of humpback whales.
Kake Tlingit Village: Experiencing the traditional culture of Kake, guests will be warmly welcomed by the Tlingit residents and encouraged to participate in their long-standing traditions. Just a short walk from the dock is the community hall, where a carving or weaving demonstration will take place. Then, guests can step onto the dancefloor where locals will perform traditional songs and dances. Finally they will see the world’s largest one-tree totem pole.
Petersburg: In Petersburg, the Ocean Victory docks right beside Alaska’s largest home-based halibut fleet, which call this shallow, protected harbor home. These abundant waters, and an endless supply of ice from nearby LeConte Glacier, led Norwegian fisherman Peter Buschmann to build the region’s first cannery and invite his fishing countrymen to join him – hence the town’s name and its strong Norwegian culture. Large cruise ships cannot come into Petersburg, so guests will be among a privileged few to dock in this charming, authentic Alaskan village.
Waterfall Coast: Guests will challenge themselves to keep track of the number of waterfalls encountered along Baranof Island’s beautiful eastern coast, the little known “waterfall coast.” Some can be seen from any of Ocean Victory’s observation perspectives, or right at water level by kayak or Zodiac. This almost hidden shoreline is perfect for discovery with seals, deer, and tidepools ready to reveal secret treasures.
The brand new expedition ship Ocean Victory will sail between Vancouver, B.C. and Sitka, Alaska on 12- and 13-day journeys including a pre-cruise hotel stay in Vancouver, B.C. or Sitka, and calling on: Canadian Inside Passage; Fiordland (Kynoch Inlet); Ketchikan; Misty Fjords National Monument; Wrangell/Stikine River Wilderness; Waterfall Coast/Baranof Wilderness; Petersburg/Le Conte Glacier; Tracy Arm/Endicott Glacier; Kake/Frederick Sound/Five Finger; and Sitka, Alaska. Sailings are available May through September 2022.
